Thursday we had Danielle Nicole here. She was the first female Blues artist to be nominated in the Bass category for the Blues Music Awards back in 2012. In 2014 she was the second woman to receive the nomination and the first female recipient in that category. Saturday we had Lisa Mann and her Really Good Band here. Lisa was the second woman to receive the Blues Music award for Blues Bassist and she has won the category two years in a row now. Maybe you were not able to make these shows, or if this was simply not enough Women of the Blues for you? If that's the case, don't miss the 4 time Blues Music award nominee Karen Lovely this Sunday at the club. She will be bringing her buddy, International Blues Challenge finalist, John Del Toro with her to perform a special Sunday show. Still not enough Women of the Blues for you, huh? Well check our September calendar to make reservations for Duffy Bishop 9/10, Maria Muldaur 9/11 for another special Sunday showcase and the return of Nikki Hill 9/16. <br /><br />~Ed MaloneyEric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-83111530505421949972016-08-11T23:52:00.001-07:002016-08-11T23:53:56.524-07:00Highway 99 Blues Book Club!<br /><br />From Ed:<br />Well, after much discussion among staff, regulars and musicians about books, specifically music books, we have decided to create a Highway 99 book club. Well, at least our version of one. (I want to make a quick personal note here: My friend Stacy will be very proud of me and Highway 99 Blues Club for starting, what I can only imagine to be, the first ever book club within a Blues music venue.) Every few weeks we will post a new book on here for all to check out. If it seems like something that is of interest to you, give it a read. This forum is open to anyone of you who has an interest in reading about music. Yes, that is correct, staff, music fans, musicians, hell we'll even include our beloved sound guy Kirk in this one. He deserves it!! Grab me at the club and tell me about any book that you would like for me to post and I will get it up here for all to read.<br /><br /><div>
I thought that I would appropriately kick off the Highway 99 Book Club with a nod to a local hero. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Harmonicas, Harps and Heavy Breathers. The Evolution of The People's Instrument by Kim Field. Kim had to leave us for some cool digs in New York City, but is a Seattle guy through and through. He is a national treasure as a blues harmonica player and the most respected author, worldwide, to take on the harmonica as a topic. Kim wrote this book back in 1993. It still stands up today. In my opinion, this is THE book to have in your collection if you are interested in harmonica. This book covers the inception of the instrument, the early days, the various forms of music where the harmonica has been applied, up to Blues and modern day harmonica. I suggest that when you read this book, first skip to the back and read up on the 8 page discography. This is going to be your soundtrack to the book. Find this music and play it as you read the book. It applies to the content of the book itself. You will find this a much more satisfying way to enjoy this read. Then the next time you see Kim, shake his hand and thank him for such an important contribution to music history. You can find this on amazon for $4.73 used and $11.29 new. That's less than the cost of a CD and it covers generations of music.<div _mce_style="text-align: center;" align="center" style="text-align: center;">

VIA-DOOM...???<br /><br />In all the years that Highway 99 Blues Club has been located in our present (and only) location, we have had to deal with more than our fair share of disruptions; construction, viaduct, tunnel, parking, street changes, a sea wall, relocating utilities and a few that I have chosen to forget.....it is not that these things do not impact the club - we know they do; just like sporting events, the weather, tax season, other shows and so on.<br /><br />Ok. So what's my point? Despite all these things happening, we still stay open, still bring in shows 4 - 5 nights a week, and do all we can to help our patrons deal with whatever might get in their way. <div>
<br /><a href="http://highway99blues.com/"><img border="0" src="https://mlsvc01-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/4dc6a02a001/02f8c2ad-c21a-41fd-8a5f-fb8ca7b5734c.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Last weekend was the first weekend of the Highway 99 viaduct closure - all the news sources predicted something short of the end of the world; and maybe traffic for the rush hours was bad - but what we know is that the streets were practically empty when it came time for our shows to start. There was plenty of parking and access was really not an issue for getting to and from the club. <br /><br />Hopefully after this weekend things will get back to "normal." In the meantime, if you were thinking of coming to the club for shows this week - but maybe thought it might be a mess - we hope you will reconsider. It is a solid week for shows: starting with Drummerboy on Wednesday, followed by the debut of the Harmonius Funk Band (crazy fun funk show!), then the Mark DuFresne Band on Friday and closing the week with the 2015 WBS Best Blues Act; The Hot Wired Rhythm Band - who was also just announced as part of the Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival line-up in July.<br /><br />As always; thank you for your continued support. Consider this a little nudge to hit the club this week sometime. We appreciate it.<br /><br />As James Brown said; "let's make everything all right." </div>

Some of you may remember the story of the Stolen Steve Sarkowsky Drum head. Yes it is true, our founder's drum head, which has hung on the wall among the club memorabilia for many years, went missing about 9 months ago. Some of you may remember being questioned by me. I May have even interrogated a few you "usual suspects" lightly or beyond. Well, I am proud to announce that Big Sark's drum head has been returned to us, interestingly enough, by our brother Eric Elliott. You see, Eric was diagnosed with liver cancer last year. He spent much of his hospital time here in Seattle as well as Las Vegas. Our 99 friends have a unique sense of humor in times of need and often go to extreme lengths to bring a smile to the faces that could use it the most. Well, Eric's got a friend who thought it a funny prank to steal something out of Eric's favorite club in an effort to bring a smile to his face while he was shacked up in the hospital. Good ole Eric Elliott returned the drum head after we had a very successful fundraiser for him just two weeks ago. When questioned by me as to "Why didn't you return this earlier??!!", Eric looked at me funny and simply said, "I've been in the hospital fighting cancer, man!" So I gave him a pass!<br /><br />You can help a brother a out by contributing to the Go Fund Me campaign that folks are using to help defray the medical bills - every little bit helps:<br /><a href="https://www.gofundme.com/fkmeyyec">https://www.gofundme.com/fkmeyyec</a><br /><br />Thank you to all of the bands, friends and family who have supported Eric here at our fundraiser and the many events on his behalf throughout the city. Eric is a true Seattle gem, who has devoted many years of his life to preserving and progressing rockabilly and rock n roll music here in Seattle. We look forward to many more years with our brother..... Just as long as his buddies stop stealing our shit, man!!! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Mckinley Wike - "Mack" - was the co-founder of the band Mutha Knows Best, formed 15 years ago. Music was among his life's passions. He was the band's drummer and was one of the reasons they rose to prominence among music fans throughout the Pacific Northwest. Playing at Highway 99 several times and bringing the house down with "True D Funk", he will be remembered for his smile, his kindness, his loving wife Diane (#1 MKB Fan), and his children. Mckinley is probably organizing a gig in Heaven. Rest In Peace.<br />Eric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-89192058480647042092016-03-10T22:57:00.004-08:002016-03-10T23:04:02.553-08:00New Menu Items, More South For Your Mouth!From Ed:<br />Well, this year has seen many cool upgrades and developments down here at the club. It's been fun kickin' this joint up a notch. In the past month we've been running some new food specials and testing out some ideas. I'd like to share a few new menu items that we think are going to make the final cut, and a couple that already have. First, we have added one new salad and one entrée to our core menu. After much conversation with many of you, we have come to realize that we should have more vegetarian and vegan options on our menu. Ladies and gentlemen I'd like to introduce the <b><span style="color: yellow;">Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Salad</span></b>: Fresh roasted red and golden beets, goat cheese and candied pecans, on a bed of mixed greens, tossed in a raspberry vinaigrette. Please request no goat cheese to make this bad boy vegan friendly. On the entrée side, the <span style="color: yellow;"><b>Bourbon St. Pork Loin</b></span> has been dominating the menu in recent weeks: two pan-seared pork medallions sautéed with a rich house made bourbon gravy, topped with red onions and served with our garlic whipped potatoes. <br /><br />Here are a few items that we are running as specials this week. Come on down, have a taste and let us know what you think. <br /><br /><b><span style="color: yellow;">Creole Tofu</span></b><br />Blackened tofu, sautéed in a Cajun sauce, with a mix of greens, onion, broccoli and carrots, and red beans, finished with our cilantro, jalapeño lime sauce and served over rice. <br /><br /><span style="color: yellow;"><b>Mississippi Roast</b></span><br />Boneless chuck roast, massaged in our own 99 rub and seared to hold the flavors in. Slow roasted, in our homemade southern style buttermilk dressing. Served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. <br /><br /><span style="color: yellow;"><b>Pork Ribs, Half or Full Rack</b></span><br />Marinated overnight, our baby back pork ribs are slow braised and fall off the bone. Served with skillet cornbread and rice and beans.Eric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-17457920406865378922016-03-01T00:36:00.000-08:002016-03-01T02:41:15.291-08:00Pahk Ya Cah!<div>

From Ed:<br />
This year has been extraordinary for us down at the club. After a, "too close for comfort" scare with our lease that consumed much of our attention and energy last year, we have been able to bounce back with many highly attended shows. The remodel, top-shelf booking and some anticipated menu changes have added to your interest in visiting this ole juke joint. The biggest factor in our year so far has been your continued support of the club and the alliance that we have formed with the musicians who grace our stage. Trust me, I am very aware of the challenges that you face as you make your plans to get here. In route to Highway 99 Blues Club, you have been tasked to navigate various construction projects throughout the city. As it seems, the closer that you get to the club, the denser these projects have become, at times even right at our front door. Most of all, Steve and I want to say thank you very much for your continued support throughout this. You have all been at our side consistently and we are proud that you won't let any of this get you down. Together, we are not going to forgo the experience of live music, in the city's premier Blues venue.<br /><br />Good news on the horizon. As the seawall construction project moves north, parking spaces will be opening up again on the west side of Alaskan Way. The parking spots across the street will be back this upcoming weekend. Directly across the street, on the west side of Alaskan Way. The spots that begin at the end of Pier 51, The Big Wheel, and south on the same side of the street will be opening up beginning this coming weekend. These are available to park and are well lit for your safety and that of your vehicle. We also have our spaces back in the lot in front of the club. (The Puget Sound Energy project has been completed.) One note, very important, do not park at the area in between our block and the Public Storage building. (The Union street pedestrian pass through). In recent weeks, Seattle Parking Enforcement has been ticketing there, and the tickets are steep. As always, I am available to walk any of you back to your cars at the end of the night. With all of the construction and police presence down here, I have not heard of any incidents of concern. However, throughout the years, single women, some of our elder clientele and Andrew Cloutier feel a stronger sense of safety when escorted by a handsome gentleman in a suit. Don't hesitate to ask me, there's a reason we call the club home, and you are our guests, or family!! That's all the info for now, I'll see you this weekend down at the club. - EdEric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-71820794981116870212016-03-01T00:33:00.002-08:002016-03-01T02:41:29.998-08:00Social Media?(originally published Feb. 17, 2016)<br />

From Big Sark aka Steve:<br />
The 37th annual Blues music Awards are coming May 5th and the list of nominees has just been posted. As most of you know, Highway 99 tries to compete with the big boys when it comes to booking shows. We are limited to some degree by being in the Pacific Northwest, and also due to the lack of clubs that follow along the I-5 corridor, down to San Diego and then heading east. Over the years we have done a pretty good job at bringing acts to our stage who are - let's be honest- within driving range of the club. So it should not come as a surprise when I tell you that 17 of the acts that have played the club are NOMINATED THIS YEAR IN 26 CATEGORIES FOR BMA'S... boom,boom,boom, boom....(That's a John Lee Hooker Boom there, not an Ed Maloney Boom!) Not only are there artists from our very own corner of the world; Lisa Mann, Jimi Bott and Karen Lovely; but just look who not only played at Highway 99 but is also nominated; James Harman, Jason Ricci (as in Grammy award winning Jason Ricci!!) Sugaray Rayford, Walter Trout - who made an amazing recovery from health issues this past year; Duke Robillard, Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, Ian Siegel, Nikki Hill, Brandon Sanitini, Fiona Boyes, Terry Hanck, Kid Anderson, Bob Corritore and John Nemeth. Pretty Impressive right? And what's really slammin' is that many of these acts will be hitting the highway over the next few months.<br />
<br />
We wish all the artists listed here and all the other acts nominated the best of luck at the BMA's. Keep your eye on the prize; or in this case - our calendar...we are loading it up and bringing the best in blues to Seattle.<br />

From Ed:<br />
All of us here at Highway 99 want to extend a congratulations to all of the participants of the 2016International Blues Challenge. I feel that when representing on a national/international platform Seattleand Portland represent the Pacific Northwest, with our musicians, promoters, supporters proudly sharing the same backyard. It is with great pride that I congratulate Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons, representing the Washington Blues Society, for snatching up first place in this year's solo/duo category. I'm proud to say that they went at it their own way. They performed their unique style of blues, often touching on current social issues, while paying respect to the origin of the music and as importantly theculture from which it was born. Representing the south side of our backyard, Greg Johnson, known as Slim Lively in certain circles, brought home the, oh so coveted triangular award. That's right folks, we got another "Keeping the Blues Alive" award recipient from the region. Greg represents the Cascade Blues Association as President. <br />

Well - you really need to get there - the changes are tight and folks' reaction has been overwhelming. People are really excited about what we have done: the new paint work, the sound system overhaul, new artwork and of course our slamming VIP section! In the two weeks that we have been re-opened, the weekends have been packed; we don't usually talk about what happened since we have so much about to happen, but we would be remiss not to mention the shows that kicked off the new year for us - Nearly Dan, Karen Lovely, Kalimba and the Hot Wired Rhythm Band - the big crowds that turned out for all of these shows. We can't thank you enough for the support. The bands were fired up, and the vibe in the club was really special. We like to think that after 11 years, we have earned our place in Seattle as an established, legitimate live music venue. With the kind of support and comments that we have heard since we opened up again, we think and feel that we are getting close to being the club that we all want: a vibrant and comfortable venue for music, food and dancing. That our mix of music is filling a space that people want to hear and see, that we respect our customers and provide the type of experience that you'll want to have again and again.<br /><br />So thanks for being there for us, and allowing us to do what we do. We have great shows coming up and even more changes over the coming months. Let us know how we are doing. We look forward to seeing you down at the joint. - SteveEric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-15304376503037168822016-01-13T20:08:00.000-08:002016-01-13T23:53:09.200-08:002016 Remodel is done!With a LOT of elbow grease and TLC from staff, friends, and family, we started with a deep clean everywhere from the front of house to the kitchen, got funky with the paintwork, built out some 2-level VIP booth seating, new stage carpet & lighting all around, a new soundboard, Kirk and Terry power-blower cleaned all the speakers... Wear an adult diaper next time you Hit the Highway, 'cause yer gonna crap yer trousers!<br />

Building out a new VIP seating section in front of the stage, re-carpeting our stage and throwing in some new stage lighting. Our good buddies Kirk and Terry are replacing the sound board, blowing out the amps and rewiring the whole system. Boom! We'll update with more photos as the project progresses. We re-open a week from tonight. </span><br />

We'd like to congratulate all of the 37th annual Blues Music Award nominees. An extra special Northwest congratulations to Pacific Northwest nominees Jimi Bott, Lisa Mann, Karen Lovely and Mary Flower. During the holiday season, please consider doing what you can for others. Perhaps that means kicking a nickel to a cause you believe in, donating cans to a food drive, or volunteering your time somewhere. Participating as members of our community is essential to the goodness of any society. Whichever causes may speak to you... help. In the winter, it's natural to focus on food and water. Whether it's <a href="http://www.whyhunger.org/">World Hunger Year</a>, <a href="http://water.org/#">water.org</a>, <a href="http://www.northwestharvest.org/">Northwest Harvest</a>, or any other worthy organization doing good work for folks who need a little help, millions of good people need food and clean water to survive. Got an extra buck or two? Got a couple/few hours time on a Saturday morning? Whatever it is, we're all in position to do something for our fellow Brothers and Sisters of the world.Eric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-15479923147103311722015-12-01T11:55:00.000-08:002015-12-01T11:55:02.896-08:00Happy Holidays and Moving ForwardFrom Steve:
Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! We hope that all of our fans/artists/staff/friends are having a great holiday season and enjoying your time with friends and family.
Since the news broke about our opportunity to extend our lease for another two years, the response from everyone has been heartwarming; to know that we have become a vital part of the city's music scene is very rewarding. We have heard from many of the artists that play the club and they are equally excited about our news. The Washington Blues Society (WBS) ran a nice photo and story about our "hanging around" in their monthly newsletter - the Bluesletter.
As we prepare for the New Year, we are deep into planning some really great new things for the club; I don't want to do a "spoiler alert" but we are gonna knock some things around and make the club even better. So be on the look-out for that as we head into January.
Since we did not get the news about the lease extension until a week or so ago; we were unable to book the first couple of weeks of January; so we figured this would be a good time to makes some changes, do some cleaning and get our house in order. Our plan right now is to be closed from January 1-12, 2016; and then re-open on January 13. I am putting the finishing touches on the booking for the balance of January and I think you'll like what you see. Plus, now that the agents across the country know we are back, many have been calling and looking for dates for some major talent to play the room.
There is no question that we are excited about the future and the chance to keep the blues alive at Highway 99!! We will still have our challenges - and our neighborhood will apparently still be under construction. We appreciate all of you and the efforts you make to patronize the club.
As always - keep in touch - come see us before the year is over - GET YOUR TICKETS FOR OUR NEW YEARS SHOW!! Are you kidding me? The 44's AND Kevin Selfe and his wicked pissa all -star band from Portland and Chebon Tiger and more..!!! This is going to be a grand evening and tickets are selling fast...
Thanks for being there for us and supporting the club and the blues - and live music. Without you - this doesn't work - and we knew that our work was not quite done yet.
Thanks.Eric Maloneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17745632859970199512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524395076364513532.post-53415823317454997472015-11-20T18:21:00.001-08:002015-11-20T18:22:42.708-08:00Highway 99 Blues Club Announces Two-year Lease Extension, remains open for Business and Blues on Seattle Waterfront
SEATTLE, WA - November 13, 20015 -- Highway 99 Blues Club
(<a href="http://highway99blues.com/">www.highway99blues.com</a>), an iconic music venue on Seattle's waterfront and eight-time recipient of the Washington Blues Society's "Best Blues Club" award, today announced that it has extended its lease by two years. Located in an historic 1909 brick building on Seattle's waterfront (1414 Alaskan Way), the club faced imminent closure at the end of 2015 due to planned rent increases, but club ownership and building management today signed a more tenable plan. Terms were not disclosed.
Inspired by the juke joints of The South and neighborhood blues clubs of Chicago, Highway 99 has brought hundreds of local, national and international music acts to a 200-seat venue where performers and audience are only feet apart. It has become a favorite destination for musicians and audience members alike, making Blues and related genres more accessible and affordable than just about anywhere on the West Coast. The Club has also been noted for its Blues-inspired menu of Southern cuisine as well as a lively dance floor.
Since it became known earlier this year that the venue would likely have to close because of significant rent increases, Club founder Steve Sarkowsky, operating partner Ed Maloney and their staff were "overwhelmed" by support from patrons, performers, and the broader Seattle community. Faced with the prospect of closing, Sarkowsky and Maloney visited dozens of other potential homes for Highway 99 Blues Club, but none matched the downtown location and vitality of its home for the past 11 years.
"This is really a day to celebrate the continuation of a Seattle institution and for all of us at the Club to thank our friends, families and performers for their incredible support," Sarkowsky said. "As Seattle grows rapidly, it's more important than ever to retain places like this that can define a city's culture and character. We are committed to bringing Seattle and the Pacific Northwest access to the very best performers in the business and creating an onsite experience to match."
For performers, the continuation of Highway 99 is also cause to celebrate:
"I've played Seattle-area venues ranging from The Gorge to Key Arena, but Highway 99 is unique in bringing audiences and artists face-to-face, providing an entirely different and intimate experience; one that rarely exists anywhere today," said Carl Verheyen, widely regarded as one of the world's top guitarists and Supertramp's lead guitarist. "It's also uncommon to find a music club of any size where everyone from management down to wait staff truly loves music. My own band and I love playing there on our West Coast tours and couldn't be happier to know that Highway 99 will remain an important part of the region's music scene."

" target="_blank">Bumbershoot</a>. Within the confines of budget and consensus, we strove to present a block of music to showcase an exciting blend of local, regional and national talent combining the familiar with the hopefully soon to be familiar. In order of appearance, the 2012 Blues Block comprised the <a href="http://www.tycurtis.net/
" target="_blank">Ty Curtis Band</a>, the <a href="http://karenlovely.com/
" target="_blank">Karen Lovely Band</a>, and the Harmonica Houseparty starring <a href="http://magicdick.com/
" target="_blank">Magic Dick</a> & the Lee Oskar Orchestra; in 2013, it was <a href="http://ajandtheway.com/
" target="_blank">Ayron Jones & the Way</a>, <a href="http://nikkihillmusic.com/
" target="_blank">Nikki Hill</a>, and the <a href="http://dukerobillard.com/
" target="_blank">Duke Robillard Band</a>. While our arrangement with OneReel bore no mercenary interest for us, I felt it fair to lead with noting our (albeit limited) involvement in the festival. That out of the way, not a word of the piece below is influenced by what is disclosed above. </i>
OneReel’s Bumbershoot Festival is the annual consumer-friendly music, arts and culture event of record for the Pacific Northwest, perhaps the United States. With a reported attendance this year of 125,000 over three days and ticket purchasers from all 50 states plus 33 countries, it resides in the national rock & pop event conversation with Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, Austin City Limits, Sasquatch, and Coachella. The significant difference in programming is, while Bumbershoot’s music line-up alone stands next to the others, it also offers a well-rounded cultural palette of performing arts with deep content showcasing comedy, film, and in a given year anything from theater and art galleries to vaudeville and burlesque, flash mobs to literary readings, not to mention a knack for introducing audiences to tomorrow’s stars and a noticeably heavier hand for showcasing its homegrown local and regional talent. If there is less Blues than there used to be, that’s more indicative of the consumer landscape than the festival itself, which has always and continues to offer more of the genre than its competitors nationwide. For a price which registers at a fraction of what the other name-brand festivals across the land are charging, Bumbershoot gives the consumer a broader and more interesting presentation of music, arts and culture past, present and future – and more Blues – than any other rock & pop festival.
Some have challenged Bumbershoot’s commitment to the Blues, and perhaps rightly so – but not so quick, as all things are relative to time and place. Admittedly, there used to be more Blues at the festival. There also used to be a whole lot more Blues in popular culture, on the radio and television. In the 70s, even as singer-songwriters commenced the decade while disco and punk closed it out, Blues-rock was filling stadiums and hanging in the Billboard Hot 100 throughout with Zeppelin, ZZ Top, the J. Geils Band, Clapton, the Allman Brothers, and the like. In the 80s, it was full-on mainstream via the height of commercial AOR (album-oriented rock) radio and MTV, helping to usher in the careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robert Cray, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, to name a few. Blues and its related family of genres was pop in the 70s and 80s, or at least a consistent resident of the Top 40, prominent magazine covers and such. Blues-as-mainstream began to taper off in the 90s, but not without the career renaissance of Buddy Guy and B.B. King, the introduction of Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and significant arcs in the careers of artists like John Hiatt and Bonnie Raitt. That’s why we saw more of it on the mainstream rock & pop festivals back then. The general public was consuming more of it. The one consistent piece to this examination is, Bumbershoot has been doing more of it than its competitors at every turn.
In the 70s, while the other rock & pop festivals were programming music only and headlining Styx, REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, and Journey, Bumbershoot was rolling with the pop acts of the day but also with Willie Dixon, Etta James, and local heroes the Amazing Rhythm Aces, offering programming highlights by computer via touchtone phone starting in ’75, and adding extra elements like the Alternative Theater Festival, the OneReel Vaudeville Show, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, literary presentations, film workshops, dance and opera to its programming.
When Live Aid ’85 gave us only George Thorogood, who used his mid-afternoon time slot well by having the otherwise-uninvited Bo Diddley and Albert Collins sit in, and a rough-sounding reunited Zeppelin with Phil Collins on drums, Bumbershoot gave us Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray, and Wilson Pickett. The US Festivals in ’82 and ’83 only came as close as Dave Edmunds one year and Los Lobos the next, while Bumbershoot gave us Thorogood, Bob Willis & the Texas Playboys, Tina Turner, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown – not to mention, Firesign Theatre and Henny Youngman on the comedy stage.
Dollars for donuts in the 21st Century, it doesn’t get better than Bumbershoot. Using one example (all the other biggies fall in), Coachella’s advance pre-sale for 2014 was $349 for general admission to the three-day music festival, or $799 for VIP, plus $60 for a shuttle pass to get and from the parking lot, $150 for VIP parking, $85 for camping and a host of other options including fancy tents and tee pees ranging from $2200-6500. Even the base price is so lofty, it comes with a down payment and installment plan option – this is true, not a figure of speech. The pre-sale sold-out in early September and the line-up won’t be announced until sometime next year. The 2013 line-up was mostly an oldies & indie rock bill, arguably as strong and interesting as Bumbershoot’s music line-up but inarguably not as well-rounded and decidedly three times the price. The only Blues-friendly artist I noticed on Coachella’s lineup was the amazing Vintage Trouble, which also played Bumbershoot along with Eric Burdon & the Animals, the Duke Robillard Band, Nikki Hill, Ayron Jones & the Way, and Vicci Martinez. And that was just one day at the Mural stage. The numbers and Blues-friendliness are the same and similar for Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, Austin City Limits, et al. Comparatively, Bumbershoot’s 2013 advance pre-sale was $45/day or $115 for all three days.
Perusing the price points and respectively awesome artist line-ups at the other major rock & pop festivals, Bumbershoot runs the table by offering more value as it consistently produces a more interesting and exciting bill of entertainment and experience for a decidedly lower, accessible price. And more Blues.

2012 was a crazy year in so many ways. This is our belated recap.
We lost some friends, among them Rick Welter, the great Portland blues man; Bob Carter, original drummer in the Mighty Blue Kings and longtime member of Nick Moss & the Flip Tops; Highway 99 resident artist, the legendary and magnificent Kathi McDonald. Our house sound man for almost three years and longtime sound man for Lee Oskar, Nearly Dan, Doctorfunk and others, Steve Dooley battled pancreatic cancer far longer and more successfully than any of the docs had given him, he made it through 2012 but on February 7 the world lost a great one. They will be missed.

We've enjoyed wonderful friendships and relationships with many amazing Artists and Musicians in the Puget Sound area, special folks who seem to rise at every occasion, always there to fill in on short notice, play a benefit when they could be playing elsewhere for money, always putting that special something into everything they do, making every show a special occasion. This is a partial list and we're total assholes for not mentioning anyone who deserves it, but the names that come right to mind here include: <b>Andrew Cloutier</b>, who quietly does it all, from bandleading and music directing to hired-gun session work, to stepping in with little or no rehearsal and still always making it look and sound like this one-night-only thing has been played a thousand times and is at its best, tonight; <b><a href="http://nickvigarino.com/" target="_blank">Nick Vigarino</a></b>, who ALWAYS shows up when there's someone in need, not to mention he is the greatest slide player this side of anywhere, electric <i>and</i> acoustic; <b><a href="http://bassicsaxx.com/" target="_blank">Scotty Harris</a></b>, award-winning sax player by trade, bass player in his spare time (his awesome wife <a href="http://bassicsaxx.com/" target="_blank">Lissa Ramaglia</a> is the award-winning bass player of the family), he got a day-of-show call from Commander Cody who asked, "...my bass player missed the flight to Seattle... could you fill in?" - 4 hours before showtime, to which Scotty said, "Why not?" and proceeded to skim through his Commander Cody albums before getting here and running through the evening's set list by key, tempo, intro and outro with Cody in the band room. This show still gets talked about by anyone in attendance on that crazy night. And of course there's <b><a href="http://karenlovely.com/" target="_blank">Karen Lovely</a></b>, who scrambled to fill a short-notice situation on a <a href="http://bluevelvetburlesque.com/" target="_blank">Blue Velvet Rhythm & Blues Dance Revue</a> show and proceeded to knock the cover off the ball, Karen has also been very active supporting <a href="http://www.ubmna.org/" target="_blank">United By Music</a> around the world, and when she hit <a href="http://bumbershoot.org/" target="_blank">Bumbershoot</a> with her awesome band plus the extra muscle of <a href="http://www.cascadeblues.org/NWBlues/PeterDammann/PeterDammann.htm" target="_blank">Peter Dammann</a> (guitar) and <a href="http://www.hankshreve.com/" target="_blank">Hank Shreve</a> (harp) she took that festival by storm.

Among headliners or co-headliners who made their Highway 99 debut in 2012: Ana Popovic, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, Carl Verheyen, the 44's, Left Hand Smoke, Kalimba Band, Bob Corritore & Dave Riley, Patrick Lamb & His Funkified Band, Mr. Nick & the Dirty Tricks, and the Laurie Morvan Band. 2012 also saw the the birth of some super cool Seattle groups, including the Timmons Wall Band, the Hot Wired Rhythm Band, and John "Scooch" Cugno re-charged his band as the 88's.

We enjoyed ongoing relationships with our rockabilly promoters, WesternGents who produce the monthly Rockabilly Night, and Marshall Scott Warner who continues to bring us amazing shows with top-shelf Americana and r&b artists, not to mention the unsung role he played in helping us land the opportunity to host a night of the KEXP "Shake the Shack" Rockabilly Ball.
When Artists and Musicians stage unique shows with a concept or theme... we dig. Among those last year:
<b>KIM FIELD'S HARP BLAST</b> (a couple shows featuring Paul Green, Adam Gussow, Hank Shreve, & Grant Dermody);
<b>SLIDE MONSTERS</b> (Brian Lee, Mark Riley, & Rod Cook backed by The Orbiters); <b>THREE GUITARS</b> (Chris Stevens, Jack Cook, & Brian Butler tearing it up on stage together);
<b><a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/TitansofTwang" target="_blank">LISA THEO & KIM FIELD and the TITANS OF TWANG</a></b>;
<b><a href="http://highway99blues.com/components/com_extcalendar/cal_popup.php?extmode=view&extid=968" target="_blank">SON JACK JR.'s HOUSE OF BOURBON</a></b> (Delta Hothouse, Blues Redemption, & the Total Experience Gospel Choir).

Early in 2012, we were tickled to be asked about curating a Blues Block at the <b><a href="http://bumbershoot.org/" target="_blank">Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival</a></b>. Our work with <b><a href="http://onereel.org/" target="_blank">OneReel</a></b> was mutually rewarding enough that they graciously asked us to do it again this year. In 2012, the Blues Block on the Starbucks Mural Ampitheatre stage featured the Ty Curtis Band, the Karen Lovely Band, and the Harmonica House Party starring the Lee Oskar & Friends Orchestra and Magic Dick. We're already working on this year's installment and while we can't announce anything probably until June, we're pretty excited about what's in the works.

By the numbers... 143 artists played here in 2012 (we're counting package shows as one artist, same as a headliner, opener, or billed special guest). From the Northwest, 82 came from Western Washington (57%), a couple from Spokane, 25 from Portland/Salem/Eugene (18%), and three from Vancouver. BC - the Pacific Northwest accounted for 78% of the artists who played here last year, and we're as proud of the strong regional showing as we are the internationally touring shows. Other artists graced our stage from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Chicago, Yugoslavia, the United Kingdom, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Phoenix, St. Louis, Colorado, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, New Hampshire, Albany, and Alberta. Whew!

<a href="http://bumbershoot.org/" target="_blank">Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival</a>, where we curated a blues block on the Starbucks Mural Ampitheater stage. It was a special day and a real highlight for everyone involved. The production crew, security, and everyone at <a href="http://onereel.org/" target="_blank">One Reel</a> really know how to throw a first-class affair. The <a href="http://www.tycurtis.net/" target="_blank">Ty Curtis Band</a> kicked things off, followed by the <a href="http://karenlovely.com/" target="_blank">Karen Lovely Band</a> featuring special guests <a href="http://www.cascadeblues.org/NWBlues/PeterDammann/PeterDammann.htm" target="_blank">Peter Dammann</a> (guitar) and
<a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/hankshreveband/" target="_blank">Hank Shreve</a> (harp). The block culminated with the Harmonica House Party starring the <a href="http://leeoskarmusic.com/" target="_blank">Lee Oskar Orchestra</a> complete with a four-piece strings section and a 2-piece percussion section, in addition to his core band of Andrew Cloutier (drums), Tim Lerch (guitar), Scotty Harris (sax), Lissa Ramaglia (bass) and Ron Weinstein (Hammond B-3). Also part of the House Party, the legendary <a href="http://magicdick.com/" target="_blank">Magic Dick</a>, a founding and still member of the J. Geils Band who kicked things off with his "Pontiac Blues" and a few others before joining Lee & the orchestra for his classic "Whammer Jammer" and a grand finale, an extended jam of "Low Rider" with Hank also sitting in. Here, we'll let the pictures to do the talking.

That's right. We said it.
We are honored to have teamed up with the fine folks at <a href="http://onereel.org/">One Reel</a> to curate a Blues Block on the Mural Ampitheater stage on Sunday, Sept. 2, at Seattle's <a href="http://bumbershoot.org" target="_blank">Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival</a>.
Our stuff:
<b>The Harmonica House Party</b> starring the
<a href="http://leeoskarmusic.com/" target="_blank">Lee Oskar Orchestra</a> &
<a href="http://magicdick.com/" target="_blank">Magic Dick</a>, the <a href="http://karenlovely.com/" target="_blank">Karen Lovely Band</a>, and the <a href="http://www.tycurtis.net/" target="_blank">Ty Curtis Band</a> play on the Mural Ampitheater Stage.
Among the other great stuff happening at the festival that same day: Tony Bennett, Wanda Jackson & the Dusty 45's, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Ian Hunter, Fruit Bats, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Mudhoney, former Highway 99 resident artist Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme; comedy with Fred Armisen, Janeane Garofalo, Brian Posehn, Laff Hole, SketchFest Seattle, and the Vancouver ComedyFest's Illegal Aliens; the writers of Futurama, Seattle Symphony "Untuxed" - and that's just some of the highlights on Sunday, only one of Bumbershoot's three great days of arts and culture.
Any Seattle music lover has got to be proud that our fair city hosts one of the nation's handful of first-rate annual music and arts festivals. What separates ours from the rest, among other things, is that Bumbershoot offers a line-up as great as any other but for a fraction of any other major festival's price, with far greater musical diversity, much more expansive non-musical art and culture than the normally gratuitous quota found at most other festivals, including comedy, the 1 Reel Film Festival, theatre including sketch comedy and improv, literary lectures, visual and performing arts and installations, the Youngershoot kids zone which is a family festival within the festival... and... the food & beverage is way better than the standard festival fare you're stuck with elsewhere.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--hOTZb_MRf8/UDGxJg0hT5I/AAAAAAAABsA/y8pqggnpQAw/s1600/bumbershoot2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="180" width="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--hOTZb_MRf8/UDGxJg0hT5I/AAAAAAAABsA/y8pqggnpQAw/s320/bumbershoot2012.jpg" /></a></div>
Cheaper than the rest. A line-up with as much star power that's also more interesting and diverse than the rest. More varied food and beverage options than the rest. More family-friendly than the rest. Better than the rest.
